The Botanical Gardens (Jardim Botânico)
Every day of the week
At the heart of charming Jardim Botânico neighborhood sits one of the most delightful green areas of Rio. With all its natural wealth, the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro (Jardim Botânico) was created in 1808 by order of the Prince Regent Dom João (later to become Dom João VI). With more than 10,000 specimens from all over the world, the park has become a mandatory stop for anyone who likes to study or simply appreciates the diversity nature has to offer. Sky-high trees create a perfect backdrop and show the way to the treasures of the park, including the Jardim Sensorial (“sensorial garden” featuring aromatic flowers) and the most important botanical library in the country. Highlights include the “Aléia de Pau Mulato,” or alley of the Capironas (tall Amazonian trees with distinctly smooth and shiny barks), the Orchids and Bromeliads exhibits, and one of the famous postcard images of Rio, the Avenue of Royal Palms.
